What is an ISBN checksum?
The final ISBN digit is calculated from the digits before it. It catches common typing mistakes, but it does not prove that a title exists or that the metadata attached to the number is correct.
Why some ISBN-13 numbers cannot become ISBN-10
ISBN-10 used the older 978 book prefix implicitly. ISBN-13 expanded the numbering space with 979, so a 979-prefixed identifier has no equivalent ISBN-10. It can still be completely valid.

Can I remove hyphens from an ISBN?
Yes. Hyphens are for readability and do not affect the checksum. This tool accepts spaces, hyphens, or a continuous string of digits.
Why can an ISBN-10 end in X?
The ISBN-10 checksum uses modulo 11. When the check value is ten, the letter X represents that value.
Does a valid checksum mean the book is real?
No. It only means the number is mathematically well formed. Confirm the title and edition with a library, publisher, or bookseller database.
